Abstract
5958. Exton, G. G. March 11. Steering-mechanism; saddle supports; brakes.- Relates mainly to cycles having two steering- wheels as described in Specification No. 28,774, A.D. 1896. The steering-head A is inclined as shown in Fig. 1, the steering-post being connected by a hinge B, Fig. 2, at its lower end to the axle D which carries the front wheels, so as to allow both wheels to remain on the ground when steering. Springs E or E<1> are provided to normally keep the axle D at right-angles to the steering-post. The springs E may be replaced by spiral springs carried in cylindrical boxes attached to the lugs B. In a modification shown in Fig. 5, a pin G formed on the axle D is pivoted in a socket H in the steering-post, the pin being retained in place by pins I engaging a groove J as shown. The saddle is supported by a pillar M secured to an auxiliary spring or springs K secured, at the rear end by a socket N, to the spring L, and secured in front to the frame. To prevent the brake from being unintentionally applied when steering, the upper end of the brake rod is connected to the brake lever by a roller Q on the brake rod engaging a curved slot R secured to the brake lever, as shown in Fig. 6.
