Abstract

8163. Hill, J. A. April 18, 1913, [Convention date]. Steering - mechanism. - A mounting for the front steering-wheels of cycles and other vehicles comprises a bearing- member 29 extending through a hollow axle 24, supporting the wheel A, and to which the steering-fork 8 is secured, the ends of the bearing- member being connected to the frame B of the machine by pivotally attached braces 34, and to a yoke 32 by tensionrods 31. The axle is rotatable on a ball bearing 30 carried by the bearing-member, and the fork is rotatable in the yoke about a ball bearing 19 ; the tension-rods 31 may be adjusted by nuts 33 to take up lost motion. Secured to the yoke and surrounding the fork-stem 9 is a sleeve 18, carrying at its upper end a bushing 20 and slidable but non-rotatable in the head 6, which is pivoted at 7 to the frame and carries the handle-bar 13 secured to the steering-post 11. Between the bush 20 and the top and the bottom of the head respectively are springs 21, 22 whereby the fork is yieldably mounted in the head ; the fork-stem has a slot 17 engaging a pin 16 on the steering-post to enable the fork to be turned by the handle-bar. Wedge-members 15 are mounted in the head and may be adjusted by means of screws to prevent the steering-post from turning too freely.
