1815. Chapman, W. H. Jan. 22. Ball bearings.-Bicycle driving-wheels are modified so that they can be readily detached without disturbing the chain and chain-wheel. The hub A is formed in two parts A and B, normally secured together by a screwed collar C. Projections b on the part B engage corresponding recesses in the part A. The chain-wheel D is secured to the part B. The latter rotates on balls on a cone E rigidly secured to the fork end by a nut. The hub A has screwed to its other end a cup L running on balls on a cone J, which is kept in position when the wheel is removed by a nut j. The parts are secured in position by screwing the axle I into the cone E as shown, its shoulder i<2> engaging the cone J and pressing it against the fork F<1>. A nut K locks the axle in position.
