Abstract

30,360. Hudson, J. C. Dec. 22. Pumping-engines; fire-engines. -Relates chiefly to the design of the steam engines for fire-engines and pumping-engines, portable, floating, and fixed. Compound engines, in which the high and low pressure cylinders A and B are arranged in tandem, are used to work the pump head M. The pistons E and F are connected by a rod G passing through a stuffing - box, and two pistonrods 1 from the low-pressure piston F are connected to the pump head M. The pump head M is connected to the crank K by a connecting-rod O. The engine is balanced by the wheels Y, or by weights opposite the crank. The slide valves S, T, like the pistons, are mounted on one rod V actuated by an eccentric on the main shaft. Two or three sets of tandem engines may be arranged side by side. The steam chest of the middle cylinder may be on the side o f the cylinder, when links and a countershaft are used to transmit the motion from the crank shaft eccentric to the valve. When the highpressure and the low-pressure steam chest are common to three sets of tandem engines, the valve of each engine is actuated by countershafts and bell-crank levers from the piston-rod of the next engine. An expansion valve, sliding on the back of the slide valve, consists of two pieces of which the distance can be adjusted by right and left hand screws actuated by an external hand-wheel.
