28,170. Turner, B. Nov. 30. Driving-mechanism.- A wheel A, secured to the velocipede &c. rear-wheel axle K, gears with an internal wheel B mounted on an axle b<1> adjustably secured in a slot m<2> in a triangular extension m<1> of the cycle frame. A treadle-lever E pivoted on the axle b<1> has pivoted to it arms H the forked ends h<1> of which engage a flange b<2> on the wheel B so that, on the downward motion of the lever E, the jaws h<1> grip the flange b<2> and drive the cycle. On the upward motion of the lever E arms F formed thereon engage the arms H and release the wheel B. A spring N lifts the lever. In a modification, the levers are formed with slots indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, which are engaged by the ends of the usual rotary cranks so as to give an oscillating motion to the levers.
