The coal is coked in an iron or steel retort a separated from the heating-flue d by a wall b between which and the retort is an annular space c. The sectional area of the flue d is substantially the same as the sum of the areas of the gas inlets e. The retort is provided with a hinged and removable base f. The gases leaving the retort are advantageously conducted into a closed condenser containing coal intended for future treatment.
