Abstract
19,280. Linley, C. M. Aug. 20. Driving-mechanism is constructed so as to allow the driving- wheel to over-run the crank axle, means being provided for rigidly connecting them so as to allow of backpedalling when desired. The Figures show forms suitable for bicycles. I n the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the chain-wheel A is mounted i n ball bearings on a sleeve B, screwed to the rear-wheel hub. Pawls D, pivoted to the sleeve B, are pressed by springs E into engagement with ratchet teeth A<3>, formed on the wheel A, so that the wheel drives during forward pedalling. The parts A and B are rigidly secured together when desired by turning a screw F, carried by the wheel A, until its end engages a notch in the sleeve B. The screw F is preferably placed tangentially as shown. In a modification, the screw F is replaced by cams which can be rotated to engage sockets in the sleeve B. In another modification shown in Fig. 5, pawls H, pivoted to the sleeve B, can be forced into engagement with the teeth A<3> by turning a disc C mounted on the sleeve B, when pins H<1> on the pawls H slide in slots C' and move outwards. A set-screw M clamps the disc C in either position.
