18,516. Lascelles, F. J. H. Aug. 10. Undercutting.-Relates to a machine adapted for cutting the coal into long blocks, breaking them out, and loading the coal into trucks. Three horizontal cutters 2 cut grooves in the top, bottom, and centre of the seams, and are followed by a vertical cutter 4, which thus leaves the coal cut into two long blocks. These are received on shoots 11, 12 which are curved away from the face ; the bottom one is also inclined upwardly so as to bring the coal from the face to the requisite height and position to be discharged into the trucks. This curving of the shoots also serves to break up the blocks of the coal. Disc or wheel cutters are shown, but may be replaced by bar cutters. When the weight on the coal is sufficient to break it down, the top cutter 2 may be omitted. The cutting and driving mechanism is carried on a trolley, which may also carry the shoots 11, 12, or the latter may be mounted on a separate trolley. The horizontal cutters 2 have teeth on their peripheries and are driven by spur and bevel gearing from the motor shaft 19 ; the vertical cutter 4 is carried by a shaft driven by bevel gearing and lying in the cut made by the central cutter 2. Blocks or slides 17 work in the cuts to support the coal clear of the cutters. A conveyer 35 may be attached for removing the cuttings, and a blower 37 for removing dust. The machine is fed forward by hauling on an anchored rope.
