Abstract

Cells; electrodes ; electrolytes, agitating.-An annular vessel, formed of sides 1, 2 and bottom 3, is supported upon trestles 4, while in the open space in the centre is supported, by a foot box 23 and traces 24, an upright shaft 29 which receives a slow rotary motion by means of a worm and worm-wheel 41, 40, shaft 43, ratchet-wheel 45, and driving-pawl 47. The pawl receives motion from a shaft 50 by means of a crank 48, adjustable link 44, and counterpoised rocking arm 46 to which the pawl is attached. The shaft 29 supports and carries around the curved arms 31, at the ends of which is a circular rigid carrier 35 having a metal band 36 on its outer side with notches 38. Engaging with these notches are hooks for suspending the articles to be plated in the bath, and also hooks carrying oilers at their lower ends to oil slightly the outer edge of the cathode ring 15, against which rest the hooks carrying the articles to be coated. The cathode ring is carried by brackets 13, and is connected to the negative pole of the dynamo by a wire 16. The anode plates 10 are supported in the electrolyte by carriers 5 connected to metal bands 8, 9 which are joined together by a metal strap 11, and also connected, when desired, to the positive pole of the dynamo. To cause the plating to be uniform on the articles, they are partly rotated, while being carried around the annular vat, by curved arms or clamps 68 supported on the cathode ring 15. By this double movement also the electrolyte is agitated. The operator standing at any point of the circumference of the vat can, without moving, remove all the articles from the vat and re-charge it with fresh articles. Two concentric cathode rings may be used, one on each side of the carrier, in which case the connection to the negative pole may pass through the hollow standard supporting the carrier, or may be made by a trolley travelling on the top of the metal band 15.
