Abstract

15,097. Lones, J., and Holden, E., [trading as Lones, Vernon, & Holden]. June 23. Rowing-apparatus.- Relates to a device which h enables the oarsman to face in the direction in which the boat is travelling. The oar is divided into two parts a, b, and the presented ends of these parts are pivoted at a<2>, b<2> in the casing c and geared together by quadrantal gear-wheels a', b<1>. The casing c is supported on trunnions c<2>, so that the blade part b of the oar can be raised or lowered in the water, and, in order that feathering may be accomplished, the blade is carried by a sleeve b<3> provided with a projection b<4> working between stops c'. When the blade is raised to the surface at the end of the stroke, it is turned automatically into the feathering position by the action of the water, and at the beginning of the stroke the blade is turned back into the working position. In a modified arrangement, there are no feathering devices.
