Abstract

14,479. Newton, H. E., [Worthington, C. C.]. June 15. Pump valves and valve gear; concussion, preventing ; duplex pumps.-The object is to gradually close the valves as the plunger completes its stroke, so enabling the pump to work without jarring at high speeds. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a power-driven double-acting pump, Fig. 4 showing the form of valves. The force valves a and suction valves b are provided with pistons 12 working in cylinders. The tops of the pistons are subjected to a constant pressure such as that of the force main, their undersides being connected by the pipes 15 and 16, the force valves to their own ends, and the suction to the opposite ends, of the cylinder. Thus during the greater part of, say, the stroke from right to left, the pressure in front of the plunger, transmitted by the pipe 15, keeps the left-hand force valve and right-hand suction valve open, but just at the end of its stroke the plunger passes the pipe 15, the pressure therein falls, and the valves controlled by it close. The invention is specially applicable to duplex pumps, in which case the varying pressures in one cylinder control the valves of the other, various modifications of the connections of the valves being described. The varying pressure in the steam cylinders may be used instead of the varying water pressure. In a modification of the valves, the stem 13 is hollow, having perforations which allow communication between the valve chamber and top of the piston. Throttle valves 1 in the connecting - pipes serve to adjust the time of movement of the valves.
