Abstract

20,185. Moore, J. Sept. 2. Hydraulicallyactuated pumps.- Relates to pumping- apparatus for mines in which pumps at a low level are actuated by rams or pistons, acted on by water columns set in motion by power pumps at the surface. Fig. 2 shows the valves and valve gear connecting the power pump with the supply tank. There are two cylinders, the plungers of which, (only one A<7> shown) are joined end to end. On the suctionstroke of the plunger A' a rib B' on the rod B<8>, moving with the plunger, causes the pin D<4> of the bell-crank D<1>, pivoted at D' to the lever B<5>, to raise the lever B<5> and open the relief valve B to admit water by the pipe C' to the cylinder. On the return-stroke the piece D<1> simply turns about the pin D<2> without raising the lever. A similar valve and gear is provided for the other cylinder. Pumps at different levels may be worked from the same power pump at the surface, the lower pumps discharging into the suction of the upper, and the power cylinders of both sets being provided with adjustable and equalizing valves of the type described in Specification No. 2447, A.D. 1883. Instead of the power pump working stroke for stroke with the mine pumps, it may run at a higher speed and produce a continuous pressure and continuous suction in separate pipes. The cam P, Fig. 6, driven at a reduced speed from the motor, operates the lever P<1> which causes the valves Q, Q<1> to admit suction and pressure alternately to the underside of the differential piston T, which operates the valves controlling the distribution of pressure and suction in the power cylinders of the pumps.
