Chain gearing. - The chain-wheel is provided with two sets of rollers a and b ; the outer set a act between the rollers c on the chain, and serve instead of teeth, while the inner set b forms a rolling bed for the same. The outer roller may be arranged singly and the inner in pairs, as shown, or vice versÔ, or both outer and inner sets may be pairs, or the inner set may be dispensed with. In this last case, the periphery of the wheel may be surrounded by a band of leather. The roller on the chain may be flanged to work over a wheel rim without flanges ; the links may be alternately long and short, so that a pair of rollers come close together and work between a pair of rollers on the wheel. Reference is made to Specifications Nos. 11,882 and 15,731, A.D. 1896.
