The spindle a has threads of different pitch on its ends ; for instance, one end may have sixteen threads to the inch and the other twenty-four. On turning the spindle by means of a spanner or screwdriver, the cones approach or recede from one another, allowing a fine adjustment of the bearing. In a modification, one end only. of the spindle is threaded, the other having a head which bears against the cone at that side.
