Abstract
3452. Newton, H. E., [Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co.]. Feb. 9. Dyes, artificial.-Disulphonic acids of the malachite-green series, which dye wool from an acid bath greenish-blue shades fast to alkalies, are obtained as follows :-The leuco products obtained by condensing alkylated diamidobenzhydrols, such as tetramethyldiamidobenzhydrol, with m-amidobenzene sulphonic acids, or derivatives thereof not substituted in the position para to the amido group, such as o-toluidine-p-sulphonic acid, o-anisidine- or o-phenetidine-p-sulphonic acid. chlor-m-sulphanilic acid, &c., are converted into the corresponding sulphinic-sulphonic leuco compounds, for example, by the process described in Specification No. 26,139, A.D. 1896. These products are separated by converting them into their calcium and sodium salts, and then oxidized directly by lead dioxide and sulphuric acid or the like to disulphonic carbinol dye-stuffs, which are neutralized and precipitated by common salt. Alternatively, the leuco sulphinicsulphonic acids are oxidized to leuco disulphonic acids by potassium permanganate or the like in alkaline solution, and these products are then further oxidized to form the dye-stuffs.
