Abstract
3089. Pyke, F. A. Feb. 5. Hubs; lubricating.-Relates to lubricating devices for the hubs of vehicle wheels, such as those of velocipedes, motor cars, cabs, and carriages. In the example shown, the hub b is provided with a transparent bulb or cup c opposite to the oilfeeding aperture d. The balls e<1> bear against bushes e, which have edges e<2> projecting as high as the top of the bulbs, so that, when oil enters the transparent cup, it is also in the bearing, but when it does not enter therein it cannot also overflow the edges e<2>. The cap f may be wholly or partly formed of transparent material, so that the bearings may be inspected. In a modification, the cup is replaced by a perforated metal tube lined with transparent material ; or the hub itself may have inspection openings which are lined with transparent material.
