Abstract

1440. Boult, A. J., [Fuller, H. F.]. Jan. 19. Acetylene. -Relates to apparatus for use in obtaining acetylene gases. Consists of an outer fixed casing A, and an inner casing B carried by chains v and counterweights w, and dipping into water in the outer casing. The casing or bell B is guided by rods t and guides t<1>. The carbide is contained in a receptacle E suspended from the top of the bell. This receptacle is so arranged that the carbide contained therein is split up into several portions, so that each portion is brought into contact with the water successively. In the example shown, the holder has an annular casing with an openwork bottom, and is divided by radial partitions, the base being helically inclined. The holder is rotatable so that its compartments may be conveniently charged through the manhole S. In modifications, used preferably for small apparatus, the holder is either an inclined metal gauze screen stretched across the bell with vertical partitions therein, or a number of separate cylindrical gauze receptacles carried from the bell at varying vertical distances therefrom. The manhole is designed so as to prevent escape of gas. For this purpose the cover has a vertical flange fitting into a bushing around the opening, and the latter has on its top horizontal surface a transversely-concave annular seating for gasket packing, preferably of india-rubber, while the outwardly-extending flange of the cover has an annular convexity of a circle of greater radius than that of the concave seat. The cover is tightened and held down by the usual clamping-bar arrangement Y. AchamberCis formed on the bottom of the apparatus, and is divided by partial vertical partitions and baffle-plates, as shown, to act as a gas condenser or scrubber. In the annular portion between the chamber C and the outer tank is arranged the hopper-shaped bottom D, forming compartments D' and D<2>. An outlet 0 is made at the lower part for discharging purposes. In commencing operations air escapes through the tube k, valve k<1>, tube H', smaller tube H, and valve l<1>. After all the air has escaped, the valve k<1> is closed, and m<1> is opened. Acetylene then passes by tubes m, F<1>, F to the chamber D', and through the opening q to the condenser C, from which it passes out through the opening q<1> and outlet pipe G. Should gas be generated to a dangerous amount, the flared open end of the pipe H<1> rises above the water and some gas escapes through the pipe H and valve l<1>.
