1372. Chadburn, W. Jan. 19. Signals, marine and ship.-Relates to ships' telegraphs for transmitting orders, or indicating the conditions of machinery &c. Fig. 1 shows the transmitting-instrument, and Fig. 4 the receiving - instrument. The pointer p of the receiver is operated mechanically by chain gearing n, c<2>, c, or by bevel gearing &c., from the hand-lever l of the transmitter, the reply pointer being similarly operated, through the gearing c<1>; c<3>, n<1>, from the lever n<2>. In addition to the mechanical arrangement, an electric arrangement is also employed. This consists of a series of electric lamps u<1> mounted in chambers u in the receiver, behind windows o<2> marked with the desired orders &c. The proper lamp is illuminated when the lever k of the transmitter is moved to the desired order, the lamp circuit being completed between the contact f and one of a series of contacts d in the transmitter. The lever k is normally coupled to the lever l by the catch i<1>, so that both levers move together; but, by disconnecting the catch, they can be operated separately, when necessary, owing to a breakdown of one of them, or otherwise, when desired. The receiver also comprises two mechanically-operated gongs s, s', and an electric gong r, the circuit of the latter being completed between the contacts f<1>, d<1> in the transmitter when an order &c. is given.
