Abstract

385. Wynne, F. Jan. 6. Tyres, pneumatic.-Relates chiefly to inflatable sphincter tubes for attaching tyres to rims. The sphincter tube 1 has its ends 1<a> butt jointed by means of plain or corrugated tube 2 to which the inflating-tube is attached, and is then partly inflated and wound spirally with sewing or pack thread 4 in order to prevent radial distension but to allow the tube to extend freely axially. This sewing 4 is applied to the solutioned exterior of the tube, and may be coated with a layer 5 of rubber. Collapsable mandrels may also be used for winding the tubes, and auxiliary sphincter rings may be applied to the inside or outside of the tube 1 in the form of spiral or corrugated metal bands. Such sphincter tubes as described may be applied inflated to a "tubeless" tyre as shown in Fig. 15, and on deflation these contract and bind the edges 9<a>, 9<b> of the cover firmly to the rim 12. Modifications are also described in which the tube 1 may be applied inside ordinary inner tubes or between the inner tubes and the covers. In some cases the air chamber may be formed of a layer of rubber rolled round to form a tube with overlapping edges, a sphincter tube being used to make an airtight joint and to press the extensions of the cover into corresponding recesses in the rim.
