Abstract

3630. Nixon, J. Feb. 20. Liquid and gaseous fuel fittings. -Relates to burners for burning gas, oil, vapour, &c., applicable for various heating purposes. The invention is mainly described with reference to a gas burner. The gas is admitted from below into the burner, and escapes by lateral openings, so that the jets burn in an annular trough E, F, Fig. 18. The trough is formed of sheet-metal parts connected by brazing &c. The whole of the air for combustion is admitted through openings in casings J, K, L, M fitted above the burner, so that it impinges on the gas jets. The burner is surmounted by a cylinder through which the products of combustion pass and escape through openings A, B above. The air-supply casings J, K and L, M may be made to project over the trough, if desired, and, if the air supply is insufficient, additional casings with apertures may be arranged above these casings. Fig. 18 shows a single set of burners, but several sets can be arranged concentrically or in parallel lines. The gas burns directly at the openings, or passes through gauze or tubes. The arrangement of the burner can be varied ; for instance, the jets may issue from openings in the outer face of an annular tube supplied by a transverse pipe &c. When spirit of wine is used as fuel, it may be vaporized, in which case the construction is the same as for burning gas ; or the trough E, F may be dispensed with, the outer annulus G, H being filled with absorbent material. Paraffin, turpentine, naphtha, campbine, &c. may be employed as fuel by first vaporizing them ; or these materials, as well as oils and fats, can be drawn up by wicks and burnt in apparatus of similar construction to that shown. The burner described is applicable, among other purposes, for smelting metals.
