Separating by rotary pitted cylinders and other moving bodies with like surfaces.-A separator of the type described in Specification 159,109, for separating mixed grains or other materials having different lengths but approximately the same diameters, consists of a container 8 for the materials to be separated, and a horizontal shaft 19 formed with a series of obliquely-set flat spokes 24 which propel the material progressively from the receiving to the delivery end of the casing. The outer ends of the spokes carry annular discs 23 having undercut pockets 23<a> adapted to receive the shorter material which is carried up in the pockets and drops from the upper part of the discs into flanged collecting spouts 31, whence it is delivered over downturned sections 32 into a delivery spout 16. If some of the longer material is being carried over, a number of the sections 32 at the delivery end of the machine where the longer material predominates may be turned back, so that the pockets 23<a> deliver to a tailing spout 26 provided with a screw 27 which returns the material to the receiving end for fresh separation. The mixture is fed to the container by a hopper 10 with independently movable gates 11, and the longer material is discharged at the opposite end by a spout 13 fitted with a gate 14. The tailing screw 27 is chain-driven from the shaft 19 through sprockets 28, 21 on the tailing shaft and the shaft 19 respectively. In a modification sets of discs with pockets of graded sizes are used for separating a mixture of materials of several different lengths, for instance large seeds, broken wheat, good wheat and oats.
