APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING OR SORTING GRAIN, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,970, dated July 4, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXSANDER BOGUS- ZEWsKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Pszeneczniki, in the Province of Kiew, Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Separating or Sorting Grain, Granular Materials, and the Like, (for whichl obtained German Letters Patent, dated June 11, 1898; Austrian Letters Patent No. 48/4,425, dated July 14, 1898,and Hungarian LettersP-atentNo.l3,264, dated July 14:, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an apparatus or device for separating and sorting grain, granular materials, or the like, and in such connection it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of such an apparatus or device.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a grain separating or sorting apparatus of simple construction and comprising, essentially, a vertically-arranged shaft or standard around which is coiled a series of spirally-arranged channels or ways in nested V relationship and of increasing diameter of spiral from the upper to the lowermost of the ways in series, said channels or ways being adapted for the reception of smaller and less rounded grains or granules, and in conjunction with these spiral channels or ways a second spiral trough or channel is coiled around the shaft and of sufficient diameter to inclose all the spiral ways in series and to provide in addition a separate way or channel wherein the larger and more rounded grains or granules are received.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a grain or analogous separating or sorting apparatus constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grain separating and sorting apparatus embodying main features of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the shaft or standard and-the internal spiral channels or ways removed from the external spiral trough and feedinghopper.
Referring to the drawings, or represents a vertically-arranged shaft or standard, around which is coiled a series of spirally-arranged channels or ways I), 1), b and b in nested relationship and of increasing diameter of spiral from the upper channel I) to the lower channel b in the series. These internal spiral channels or waysterminate in a common chute or exit 0. To the upper end of the shaft or standard a is secured a feed-hopper d, the base of which is open and controlled by a slide 61. Around the shaft or standard a is also coiled a spiral trough e, which incloses the internal spiral channels and is provided with a vertical flange e at its outer edge and terminates in a chute or gutterf, located, preferably, diametrically opposite to the chute or exit 0 of the internal spiral ways I), b, b, and b The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: The unsorted material in the hopper cl is discharged or distributed evenly over the internal spiral ways or chan nelsb, 1), b and b and the smaller particles enter these ways or channels and travel downward thereon until discharged from the chute or exit 0. In this travel the larger particles which may be forced from the channel I) will be caught by the next channel I), the diameter of whose spiral is enlarged for that purpose, and so on. Those particles which are too large for the larger spiral way 11 are caught in and conducted by the spiral trough e and discharged throughthe chute or gutter-f.
The apparatus is especially adapted for the sorting or separating of grain which is of oblong or ellipsoidal shape from rounded objects, such as peas or beans, since in the discharge of the mixed grain and foreign materials the internal spiral ways will catch and hold the oblong or ellipsoidal grains, whereas by centrifugal force the rounded grains, such as peasand the like, will roll over the internal spiral ways and enter the external spiral trough e.
Having thus described the nature and objectof my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
In a separating or sorting apparatus for grain and granular materials, a verticallythose which enter the internal spiral 0113.11 nels, substantially as and for the purposes described.
