Abstract
188,803. Lane, J. B. Aug. 22, 1921. Casting-machines.-Tubes are formed progressively between members having relative longitudinal movement, the method being characterised by the feature that molten material on partial or complete solidification in a space between the members is compressed laterally so as to be compacted with the tubular section previously formed. A mould C, Fig. 1, provided with an annular recess c is reciprocated over a stepped mandrel B fixed in the molten-material reservoir A. The mandrel is cooled at its end and for a predetermined portion of its length by an adjustable water pipe D insulated by an air space from the mandrel. On reciprocation of the mould, the material in the recess c is cooled bv contact with the mandrel and is then forced laterally into the previously formed tube-section by the end pressure of the surface b on the fluted part B of the mandrel. In a modification, a similarly cooled mandrel B, Fig. 4, is of tapered formation at b<8> and coacts with a mould C provided with arc-shaped projections c<1>. On the downward stroke of the mould, the tube already formed is arrested by the end b of the mandrel and the new charge of molten material entering the mould becomes cooled so that during the subsequent upward stroke, the projections c' compress the additional material laterally to form a new tube section. Either the mould or mandrel may be reciprocated and in the latter modification a water bath F, Fig 7, may be provided for the stationary mould. A series of units may be grouped for simultaneous actuation by a crosshead driven by eccentrics or other means. Burners mav be fitted to maintain the material in the reservoir in the required molten state.
