Abstract
In the extraction of sodium nitrate from caliche the reduction of yield consequent on the formation of the double salt sodium nitrate-sodium sulphate is avoided by maintaining the presence of reagents having a greater affinity for sodium sulphate than has sodium nitrate, the leaching being effected at or below 58 DEG C. and the cooling being effected by refrigeration. The reagents mentioned are potassium, magnesium, and calcium compounds, particularly magnesium sulphate, calcium sulphate, syngenite (calcium potassium sulphate) and astrakanite (magnesium sodium sulphate). Sometimes caliche contains glauberite (calcium sodium sulphate) or other impurities having similar effect, and in that case caliches not containing such compounds may be mixed with a caliche containing such compounds. In any case, the leaching is so conducted that these advantageous compounds, whether originally present or added, are not removed during the process. One effect of this process is that the sodium sulphate remains behind with the slimes, rendering the slimes readily filterable. Cooling to separate the nitrate is carried to 7 DEG C. or such lower temperature, occasioned by the impurities present, as may be possible without causing crystallization of sodium sulphate. Substances which are stated to allow of such lower temperatures are particularly potassium and magnesium salts, iodates and borates. Specification 2233/86 is referred to.
