Stationary-vessel washing-apparatus.-A sandwashing machine comprises a main separator and a series of finishing chambers provided with water jets to keep the sand in agitation and to propel it from vessel to vessel. The foul sand is first placed in a hopper A and is agitated by a water jet from the nozzle A<1> and is discharged by a propelling jet through the spout A<2> on to a shaker screen B, for removing the larger stones, which is actuated by a water-wheel driven by a jet of water from a branch pipe leading off from the main supply pipe H<4>. The sand and water which passes through the screen B enters the main separator C, provided with a baffle plate C<2>, in which the sand is violently agitated 'by a water jet from a nozzle C<1>. Water and impurities overflow a weir W into the receiving tank D whilst the sand sinks into the recess C<3> and is projected by a jet C<4> into the first of a series of finishing chambers D', D<2>, D<3> arranged one above the other in step-like form, each being provided with propelling jets E<1>, E<2>, E<3> and overflow weirs so that the exhaust water flows through these vessels in the opposite direction to the sand. The sand is finally discharged from the last finishing chamber D<3> through the passage G<3> on to inclined and perforated plates H, H<1> the latter being arranged over a sump H<2> for collecting the water drained off from the purified sand.
