Abstract

Column stills; film evaporators.-An apparatus for distilling solvent from solutions of oils or fats obtained by extraction comprises a column of hollow metal steam-heated discs 2, Fig. 2, having inclined surfaces, surmounting a series of discs 3, Fig. 3, having intervening annular baffles 3<1> of wire gauze &c. Steam is passed through the discs 2 from an inlet 5 to an outlet 6. The solution to be distilled is fed by a pipe 4 and passes in a zig-zag course over the upper surface of the discs 2 and then over the discs 3 and intervening baffles. Steam is introduced into the lower part of the column by a pipe 8. A cooling coil may be arranged near the outlet 9 for the oil. Vapours pass upwards around the outsides of or through the centres of the discs to an outlet 7. The apparatus may be maintained under reduced pressure. The column 2 and series of discs 3 may be arranged in separate casings, and the liquid from the base of the column may be pumped to the top of the series of discs. The discs are coated with a metal which is not attacked by the solvent.
