Column stills and rectifiers.-A column apparatus for distilling alcoholic or other liquids and fractionating the vapours is constructed so that no accumulation of liquid takes place in the column, and the vapours are given a whirling motion by passage between spiral vanes. The dephlegmating sections are formed w i t h downwardlyinclined baffle-rings 40, Fig. 1, above the openings in which are supported, on spiral vanes 42, convex plates 41. In the portion of the column serving as a reflux condenser, cooling- coils are placed above the rings 40 and the convex plates are supported by spiral vanes depending from the lower sides of the rings. To separate an immiscible constituent, for example, fusel oil from wines or beers, the refluxed liquid passes into a collecting-channel 43, Fig. 2, and thence into a vessel 46, from which the upper layers of liquid are withdrawn by pipe 47 and the lower layers are returned to the column by pipe 48.
