Abstract

186,298. Power Driven Machine Gun Corporation, (Assignees of Mathias, L.). Sept. 22, 1921, [Convention date]. Machine guns. - Power-driven means for operating a machine gun independently of the forces of explosion comprises a motor-driven shaft 14 adapted for rotation in either direction and having a series of cams 17, 18, 19, 20 which respectively serve to (1) open the breech, (2) automatically lock and release the breech-block in the open and closed positions, (3) release the firing-pin, and (4) slide the cartridge carrier over the face of the breech-block. The invention is shown applied to a fixed-barrel gun having breech mechanism of the Maxim type comprising a vertically sliding cartridge carrier 34 mounted on the front face of a longitudinally sliding breech-block 32, which is connected by rods 31 and a crank 30 to a crank shaft 29. This shaft is rotated to open the breech against the action of a flat spiral spring 35, Fig. 4, by a sinusoidal cam 17 on the shaft 14 through the medium of a lever 25 rocking on a shaft 26, the lower end of the lever carrying a roller 24 engaging the cam and the upper end being cam-shaped to engage a short crank arm 28 on the shaft 29. The spring 35 serves to close the breech under the control of the cam 17. By rotating a spring- controlled finger-piece 43, a member 41 can be moved to retain the lever 25 clear of the cam 17 when the breech is open. The cam-device 18 acts upon a bell-crank lever 46 to remove a projection from recesses in a disc 50 on the. shaft 29 to permit the breech to open and close at timed instants. The firing-pin 54, which is cocked by a lever 57 actuated during the opening of the breech by a projection 56 on the rod 31, is retained by a sear 60 pivoted to the lock at 62. A ledge 69 on the sear supports the cartridge-carrier 34 and prevents the release of the firing-pin until the breech is closed and the carrier raised. The cam 19, which acts upon the sear 60 to fire the gun, may be moved to inoperative position by sliding it along the shaft 14 by actuating a lever 66, thus permitting of cartridges being passed through the gun without firing. The cartridge carrier 34 is raised to engage a fresh cartridge in the belt by a lever 77 engaging the cam 20. The casing of the gun is so arranged that the upper part containing the gun mechanism is readily detachable from the lower part containing the drive shaft and operating cams. The hinged front and rear top covers 82, 93 of the mechanism casing are fastened by a single sliding spring knob 89.
