Rollers, land and garden.-Concrete, artificial stone, or like material is substituted for iron in the hollow cylindrical rollers of garden and land rollers, or for the balance weights, or for both rollers and balance weights. Fig. 1 shows an approximately semi-cylindrical balance weight A moulded with a metal axle or spindle B in position. The spindle ends project so as to pass through bearings in the rollers, and are attached to the handle. Arms D project from the spindle into the body of the balance weight A. The axle mav be embedded in the concrete with reinforcements in the form of wires, rods, or meshwork. It may be of plain round or square section, or may be fitted with projecting pins, or roughened, bent, or distorted. Fig. 7 shows a hollow roller consisting of a concrete tube G and prepared end pieces H of concrete or metal. The end pieces may be solid, or perforated, or cut away to form radiating arms; the concrete end pieces are provided with metal bearings C. One end piece H is placed on a form J and then internal and external casings are placed in position and filled in to form the tube G up to the top of the inside casing. After the inside casing has been removed the balance weight A is inserted, the other end piece placed in position, and the tube G completed by means of a mould form, striking form, or tool. The end pieces may be moulded in one with the tube G, the upper one being supported by a piece of sheetmetal, meshwork, lathing, asbestos cement, fibrous board, &c. The end pieces may be jointed into dovetailed recesses formed in the tube G by collapsable annular mould forms, the joint being made of similar material to the tube or other jointing material Fig. 13 shows a roller made around a permanent frame P, N, enclosing the balance weight. In a modification, the tube G is made around a cylindrical frame P connecting two end pieces H and enclosing the weight. In another, the concrete is applied to the inside of the external casing K. The outer casing may consist of a framework or cage of meshwork or lathing, or sheet metal, and may or may not be removed. Additional concrete may be applied outside it, or after removing it. The outer casings may be shaped to form rounded corners; or these may be shaped by mould forms or striking forms, or by strips placed in the moulds.
