Abstract

185,587. Glibert, V. G. W., and Foamite Firefoam, Ltd. July 25, 1921. Fire-extinguishing by foam. - Relates to fireextinguishing systems for oil-burning or oil-driven ships, of the type in which two foam-producing liquids are stored separately in tanks a, b, and are adapted to be forced through separate pipes i, l to a mixing-point, such as a manifold j, close to the fire zone, to produce a fire-extinguishing foam. The foam is distributed over a wide area at the danger zone by a system of foam-discharge fittings, such as perforated pipes, nozzles, sprinklers, &c. k, m, arranged singly or in groups. The solutions are discharged from the tanks a, b by gravity, by pumps, or by steam or other fluid pressure introduced through pipes c and a valve d, which is operated by means of a handle e from the engine room or elsewhere. The pipe system containing the solutions under pressure is separated from the mixing-chamber by fusible plugs, diaphragms, &c., or by one or more valves opening automatically under the influence of heat. The foam-discharge fittings are arranged singly or in groups in the space between the underside of the floor of the boiler room or engine room or both and the top of the double-bottom tank, and also if desired in the boiler and engine rooms above the floor level. Valves adapted to be operated from either side of the screens of the protected spaces are arranged in the distributing system so as to limit the foam discharge t o desired portions of the area protected by the installation.
