Abstract

Explosive salts of tetrazole or triazole or their derivatives are used in detonators, percussion caps, &c. These salts may be mixed or precipitated simultaneously to form double or mixed crystals with other ingredients such as azoimide, mono- and polynitrated phenols and their substitution products such as di- and tri-nitroresorcin and trinitrophloroglucinol, also m-dinitro, o-dinitrosobenzene and trinitrodinitroso-b -naphthol. The salts may also be granulated with paraffin or resins dissolved in benzene, xylene, or carbon tetrachloride. Blasting detonators may contain a top charge of such compositions, for example a charge of lead azotetrazole over lead or cadmium tetrazylnitride over tetranitromethylaniline. The preparation of the following substances is described, namely:-(1) Tetrazole, synthetically from dilute hydrazoic acid and prussic acid, or by reduction of diazotetrazole salts by chloride of tin or alcohol, or by oxidation of naphthyltetrazole or aminophenyltetrazole with potassium permanganate; (2) tetrazylazoimide, by splitting tetrazenes or treating tetrazylhydrazine with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid; (3) azotetrazole, by oxidizing aminotetrazole in alcoholic solutions with permanganates or persulphates, the aminotetrazole being obtained synthetically from cyanamide and hydrazoic acid or by reconstruction in the presence of sodium acetate of guanylazide salts formed when aminoguanidine salts are diazotized; (4) oxyazotetrazole, by treating diazotetrazole salts with carbonic acid; (5) diazoaminotetrazole, by diazotizing aminoguanidine salts with sodium nitrite in acetic acid solution; (6) diazotetrazole, by boiling phenyltetrazolecyanide with alcoholic synthetically from cyanogen gas and hydrocyanic acid solution; (8) phenyltetrazole-carboxylic acid, by boiling phenytetrazolecyanide with alcoholic potash lye; (9) methylmercaptotetrazole, by diazotizing methylthiosemicarbazide; (10) phenylethenyldioxytetrazole, by decomposing with alcoholic potash lye the phenylacetamidine salt thereof obtained during the diazotizing of phenylacetamidinenitrate; (11) b -naphthenyldioxytetrazole, by decomposing the b -naphthenylamidine salt obtained in diazotizing b -naphthenylamidine; (12) phenylglycolenyldioxytetrazole, by decomposition of the phenylglycolenylamidine salts obtained by diazotizing phenylglycolenylamidine; (13) benzenyldioxytetrazole, by diazotizing acid benzenylamidine and decomposing the benzenylamidine salt thus obtained; (14) m-nitrobenzenyldioxytetrazole, by diazotizing m-nitrobenzenylamidine; and (15) p-tolenyldioxytetrazole, by diazotizing p-tolenylamidine and decomposing the resulting p-tolenylamidine salt with alcoholic potash lye.
