Shovels.-The blade of a shovel a is provided with a thickened portion b down the centre, the thickening being slight and narrow at its commencement near the heel end of the blade and becoming wider and thicker until it reaches a point near the end of the shaft groove d, where it is thickest and has a maximum width of a third the width of the blade. This continues for about a ninth of the length of the thickening, when the latter decreases in width and thickness until it ceases to exist at a point near the toe end of the blade. The heelend half of the blade between the part b and the sides e is thinner than usual in comparison with the toe-end half.
