185,460. Greenwood, R., and Carr & Co., Ltd. May 3, 1921. Cooling-chambers.-In an apparatus for baking biscuits &c. and for drying materials at high temperatures, the goods are caused to ascend through a vertical oven having a number of independently-controllable heating-zones, and then to descend through an adjacent chamber to which air for cooling is admitted at the lower end. The goods are carried on trays 14, and in each chamber these are raised or lowered by a pair of endless conveyers 8, 10 having angle-iron supports 13 for the trays. Near the upper end of the heating-chamber 1 the trays are transferred to the cooling-chamber 2 by an endless chain 21 having abutments 22, which push the trays from the supports of the heating-chamber conveyers on to aligned supports of the conveyers in the cooling- chamber. The driving-mechanism for the conveyers of the cooling-chamber is preferably geared down relatively to that of the heating- chamber conveyers, and the supports for the trays are set closer to correspond with the reduced rate of travel. The cooling-air is withdrawn from the chamber 2 at a level beneath that of the point of transfer between the two chambers, so that a more or less dead air space is formed at the top of the cooling-chamber.
