Abstract

185,037. Clark, W., Dawson, G., and Dawson, W. A. Oct. 10, 1921. Impact pulverizers; mills and apparatus.- Relates to apparatus for wet or dry pulverizing with or without mixing and grading, and comprises a casing with a grinding-surface made of wire carding, wire, or its equivalent to act in conjunction with a similar grinding-surface or with blades on a rotor or travelling member, the co-operating grinding-surfaces being arranged so that they do not touch each other. Figs. 1 and 2 show a conical compartment apparatus comprising preliminary and secondary pulverizers with a grading-attachment. The casing n, p is lined or fitted with projections h<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, blades h<2>, or wire carding &c. k<1>, Fig. 5, or with a combination of these. The working-surface of the arms g, h are plane or grooved or fitted with spaced blades h<3> or with wire carding &c. The blades k<2> and carding k<3> may be mounted on a drum k fixed to a solid or hollow shaft g'. The casing is provided with one or more adjustable inlets a, a<1>, a<2>, and one or more adjustable outlets in conjunction with which work a slide x<1>, a deflector w<1>, a fluid inlet port z fitted with an adjustable regulating-plate z', a delivery duct v, and a cut-out member v<1>. The inclination of the deflector w<1> is adjustable by means of a screw w to determine the grade of the product; or the position of the member v<1> may be adjustable. The product may be driven by an intermittent blast from a nozzle c up a duct e of abruptly increasing area and provided with traps or hoppers f in its bottom to collect the various grades of material. The ends l, l<1> of the ducts d, e are connected to an exhaust chamber or collector. A trap t is provided for closing the normal outlet y when the grading blast is in use, and a trap u to cover the nozzle c when not in use. The traps e<1>, e<2>, n are shown in position to direct the product to the grader. By closing the trap e<1>, as shown in dotted lines, the product is directed over the trap e<2> on to a conveyer-like pulverizing and mixing member d' fitted with blades, wire carding k<3>, wire, or the like to co-operate with wire carding, or blades &c. on the inner surface of the duct e; the material then passes down a shoot y fitted with a trap t. The casing may be placed vertically, horizontally, or at an inclination, and the rotary members may be arranged in compartments n, p connected by a feed-duct b. Fig. 7 shows a plate or disc type of apparatus, the shaft g<1> of the rotary member k being adjustable axially by means of a screw r<1> and rocker member g<2>. The feed-inlet a' is arranged centrally, and fluid entering through the inlet a<2> passes through ducts in the rotary member k to between the grinding- faces k<1>, k<2>. In reducing large pieces of material, they are first subjected to the action of heavy rotary arms with plane or grooved grinding-surfaces coacting with projections and heavy blades in the casing, then to the action of rotary arms with strong wire or blades coacting with a grinding-surface of projections and blades of a lighter type more closely set and of coarse wire, after which the material upon the rotor coacting with a wire grinding-surface on the casing. When a very fine powder is required, the material is further treated by fine wire mounted upon the rotor, preferably in blocks or series, coacting with a fine wire grinding-surface on the casing.
