Abstract

Infusing-machines.-An automatic machine forcoffee-making is provided with means whereby on introducing an appropriate token and pressing a button, a certain quantity of coffee is measured out, ground, and introduced into. an infuser through which steam and hot water are passed; at the same time an infuser containing an exhausted charge of coffee is ejected from the machine and a fresh infuser placed in position to receive the next charge. The starting-appliance is shown in Fig. 4. The tokens are introduced through a slot 9 and fall on a weighted lever 11 which is thus tilted and then held in position by a catch 21, thus releasing a lever 19. A button- 25 is then pressed, actuating the lever 19 through. a push-rod 26 provided with a spring detent 27. The lever 19 carries a contact 35 which closes the circuit of an electric motor driving the apparatus- ,and a pin 31 which engages with a slot in a disc 33 on a shaft 34 driven by the motor and is withdrawn when the lever is moved to close the circuit. The circuit is thus kept closed until the disc 33 has made a complete revolution, when the pin 31 falls back into the slot, breaking the circuit and locking the machinery. Meanwhile the lever 19 has released the catch 21, so that the lever 11 falls back into place, locking the lever 19. The motor drives shafts 40, 42, Fig. 6, carrying a number of cams which operate the various parts of the apparatus. Cam 43 operates through levers 68, 67, sliding rod 65, Fig. 11, which through a rack and pinion rotates a slotted cyhn- - der 57 so as to deliver the coffee beans which fill -the slot to a grinding mill 63 when they pass to an infuser 64 in a hole in a rotary disc 1. The disc 1 is formed with eight such holes and is rotated through an eighth of a revolution when the infuser is charged by means of a pawl operated by a cam 46 and engages with notches on the edge of disc 5, which is then locked by a detent 51 operated by a cam L until the various operations are completed. The motion of the disc 1 brings the charged infuser into position between two sliding cylinders 71, 72, Fig. 15, which are caused to grip the infuser and make a tight joint therewith by toothed racks and sectors operated from a cam groove 80 on a disc 45 by a. lever 82 and links 86, 85. When the cylinders are in this position, water and steam can pass to the coffee from a pipe 76 through a passage 73 in the cylinder 71, and the infusion passes through spouts 79 on the cylinder 72 to the cups. The supply of steam and water to the pipe 76 is controlled by valves 102, 101, Fig. 17, operated from a camgroove 89 on the disc 45 through a lever 91, rod 93 and tappets 94. The arrangement is such that the valve 102 is first opened, admitting steam, the valve 101 is then closed and the valve 101 opened, admitting water, the valve 101 is then closed and the valve 102 opened, and finally both are closed. The infusers containing exhausted coffee are expelled by a rod 97, Fig. 7, operated by the lever 68 which thrusts them out of the holes in the disc 1, and a rod 98 actuated by a cam 99 which knocks them off the disc. A pile of infusers is placed between guides 104, Fig. 3, and the bottom one falls into one of the holes in the disc' 1 as it comes into operation.
