Abstract

183,377. Leeuw, J. de. Aug. 27, 1921. Addition to 163,805. Locks, permutation.-In a lock of the kind described in the parent Specification in which movement of the locking-bolt is controlled by a rotating member carrying a number of elements some of which have to be pressed in to release the member, and in which the elements are restored to their initial position by a plate mounted on the shaft which also carries the finger for pressing in the elements and the rotating frame, one of the elements is of special form, and when pressed in allows the frame to rotate but not the finger, and engages a member in the stationary frame which can be operated from outside the lock. This element 21 has a hook-shaped beak 22 and a notch 23. When all the necessary elements 5 have been pressed in by the finger 14 to bring their projections 12 in line with the notches 13 of the corresponding elements 7 of the stationary frame 3, the finger 14 is rotated until in contact with the stop 32, Fig. 6, on the rotating member 4 and then pressed to push in the element 21. This brings the notch 23 in the element into line with the blade 25 on the member 24, and also pins the finger 14 between the stop 32 and the beak 22 so that an unauthorized person finding the lock in its open position cannot move the finger to discover which of the elements 5 have been pushed in. To change the combination, it is necessary to move the members 7 so that different ones occupy the position of the one shown in Fig. 1 with the stop-disc 8 engaging between the projections 10, 11, requiring the corresponding element 5 to be pushed in to release the boltcontrolling disc 4. The members 7 occupying the position in which the stop-disc 8 engages behind the end projection 10 do not require their corresponding elements 5 to be pushed in. The member 24 is pushed forwards by its knob 29, causing the blade 25 to enter the notch 31 in the disc 4, and freeing the part 26 from its notch in the fixed casing 2. The finger 14 is then operated to push in the elements 5 forming the combination, the element 21 being undisturbed. The knob 29 is then turned, the part 26 rotating the stop disc 8 to bring notches 9 on it opposite the members 7, and the blade 25 rotating the disc 4 sufficiently to engage partially the elements 5 with their corresponding elements 7. The plate 17 is then pulled back by the knob 16 to place all the elements 5, 7 in their extreme position and the finger 14 is then operated to push in the elements 5 forming the new combination, these elements carrying the elements 7 with them. The knob 29 is then rotated back and the disc 8 locks the members 7 in their new positions and the part 26 enters its slot in the casing to lock the disc 8 by the projections 27. By rotating the disc 4 only sufficiently to engage the members 5 and 7, the setting dial may be used to set the new combination.
