Abstract

183,245. Holt, H. E. S. April 19, 1921. Sliding bolts operated mechanically from a distance; seal fastenings.-An emergencyrelease coupling, particularly for releasing a person from a parachute on landing, comprises two coupling members connected by a screw-threaded pin which is engaged by an internally screw-threaded winding-reel provided with a wound cord or tape &c. so that the pin is withdrawn to release the coupling when the cord or tape is pulled. Fig. 4 shows a section of the device in which a member a is secured to a forked member d by a pin h. Mounted between the member d and a spaced cheek e is a reel f threaded to engage the screwed end of the pin h, the pin being prevented from rotating by a projection k on a plate l engaging a slot k<1> in the pin. A cover m is secured over the parts by a nut n, screw eyes n', n<2> being provided to take the wire of a lead seal. A tape o is wound on the reel f which is prevented from rotating too freely by a spring brake-ring r. To prevent the tape o from being pulled accidentally it is passed through a hole u, Fig. 8, in a leather sheath s secured to a bracket on the member d, and is provided with a tongue o<1> which is normally inserted in a hole u<1>. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which the forked member d is in two parts hinged at g<1> to facilitate the initial coupling of the device. The pivot g' is integral with a plate d' which is slotted at w to engage the end of the pin h and is normally retained in its closed position by a spring-pressed bolt v. According to the Provisional Specification a locking-pin may be inserted through holes in the reel flanges and its supports to pass across the outer convolution of the tape.
