Mineral and tar oils.-Liquid hydrocarbons, such as tar oils, are heated under pressure with an alkali in the presence of hydrogen to obtain hydrocarbons of low boiling-point. The formation of the liquid hydrocarbons may be effected in the presence of water or of water and hydrogen and the higher the pressure used the lower the temperature required, as at 700‹ C. 15 to 25 atmospheres pressure is necessary as against 150 tc 200 atmospheres at 400‹ C. The material from a container b is forced by a pump c into a reaction tube 1 heated by hot gases from a furnace and supplied with hydrogen from a bottle f and compressed if necessary by a twostage compressor d, e. When the required pressure has been reached, a valve 6 opens and the gaseous mixture passes to a cooled expansion vessel i in which partial condensation takes place. Further cooling and condensation take place in coolers o, q, s and receptacles p, r, t, the last light oils being separated in a coil u in a freezing mixture and collected in a receptacle y. Carbon dioxide is absorbed in a vessel z and the hydrogen, methane, &c., are dried in a tower 18 and passed by a pump 22 and a pipe 19, to be used again in the process. Electrical heating may be employed.
