Abstract

182,569. Igranic Electric Co., Ltd., (Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co.) April 6, 1921. Delivery apparatus.-In mechanism for counting and batching articles such as newspapers, of the kind comprising a conveyer for the articles and means controlled by the latter for engaging and effecting deflection of one of the articles after a predetermined number has passed, the deflecting means is also controlled by the conveyer so that the article thus deflected is released after a predetermined travel of the conveyer. The latter consists of travelling belts 1, 2 carrying the newspapers 3 between them in overlapped relation. The deflection of one of the newspapers to the position shown in Fig. 2 is effected after a predetermined number has passed by means of a prong 6 which is projected upwards to engage one side of the newspaper bv an armature attracted by a coil 5 controlled by a switch 7. Fig. 1, associated with a counting-device 8 of known kind. This counting-device comprises a counter 9 driven by a motor 10 through gearing 11 controlled by an escapement 12, 13 actuated by an electromagnet 14, the circuit of which is made and broken by a switch 15 each time a newspaper passes thereover. The switch 7 comprises leaf springs 16, 17 insulated from one another and having end contacts 18, 19, and downwardly projecting lugs 20, 21 bearing against a cam 22 on the shaft of the ratchet-wheel 12. The lug 20 is arranged in advance of the lug 21 so that, when the cam 22 has made a complete rotation, the lug 20 drops over a shoulder 23 on the cam 22, thereby lowering the spring 16 whilst the other spring 17 is still raised and effecting engagement of the two contacts 18, 19, thus closing the circuit through the coil 5 which projects the prong 6 to deflect the newspaper then passing. Shortly afterwards the spring 17 descends and breaks the circuit of the deflecting-coil. The mechanism for projecting and retracting the prong 6 is as follows; the armature 29, Fig. 3, of the coil 5 is pivoted at 31 to the magnet frame 28 and carries a rear extension lever 33 the end of which is connected by a toggle 34, 35, to a member 30 also pivoted at 31 and carrying the prong 6 at its extreme end. The toggle links 34, 35, normally kept straightened against a stop 40 by a pin 39 on a roller 37 which is rotatably mounted on a lug extending downwardly from the member 30 and urged in counter-clockwise direction by a coil spring 38, so that, on closing the circuit of the coil 5, the upward motion of the lever 33 is transmitted by the toggles to the member 30 and the prong 6 is projected. The roller 37, rising with the member 30, now contacts with an internal friction surface 41 on a pulley 42 driven continuously in a clockwise direction by a belt 44 from a roller of the conveyer, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the roller 37 is rotated clockwisa until the pin 39 contacts with the left-hand side of the toggle and breaks it thus enabling a downwardly acting spring 45 to depress the member 30 and retract the prong 6. The roller 37, descending with the arm 30, is then disengaged from the pulley 42 and is rotated counter-clockwise by its spring 38 until the pin 39 engages the right-hand side of the toggle ready to reset it in normally straightened position when the lever 33 is released by breaking the circuit of the coil 5.
