Abstract

181,917. Rand, J. H. May 3, 1921. Sheets and cards.-A card-index device comprises a frame A, Fig. 2, with inwardly projecting flanges a and a series of card-holders C of paper or other material having separate strips secured by staples along their upper margin to form tongues c<1>, Fig. 7, and projecting lugs c to retain them in an overlapping series in the frame. A strip of celluloid or other transparent material D, Fig. 9, folded along the lower edge of the cardholder and secured by two wire-loop staples or wire stitches d, has its back fold extending farther from the edge than the front fold, which projects outwardly from the body of the card-holder to form an open-ended pocket to receive index slips; notches G in the card B engage the staples d and hold the edge of the card within the sheath D. The card-holders are mounted in the frame with the tongues c<1> of one card-holder engaging the upper edge of the card-holder next below it, thus exposing the lower margins of the cards one above another. Each card-holder is scored near the upper edge at E, Fig. 2, to form a hinge to allow raising of the card-holder to expose the card beneath it, and by scoring near the lower edges at H, Fig. 9, the lower edge of a cardholder may be bent back to expose the back of its card. The lower free edges and opposite side edges of the card-holders are preferably coloured, and notches or apertures M, Fig. 2, are provided in the lower edges of the cards to reveal the coloured lower edges of the cardholders, classification being indicated by differences in colour and different locations of the notches. The card-holders may carry a card on both front and rear faces, and may be made in two sections, the main detachable portion carrying the card having tongues or lugs engaging slits in the upper portion attached to the tongue c'.
