Abstract

181,433. Ratcliffe, W. H. March 4, 1921. Track apparatus for stopping trains.-Apparatus for stopping a train independently of the driver has depending arms at each side of the engine joined by levers; each arm has a plunger working therein and is connected bv a train of levers to valves to cut off steam and to apply the brakes when the arms engage a pivoted inclined plane upon the track. The arm A is pivoted to a bracket B on the side of the engine frame, and the plunger D passes right through the arm, then through the bell-crank lever E. It is then bent and fixed to a guide-block F sliding in a slot in the lever H, which is pivoted on a bracket and secured to a bell-crank lever J which operates the.engine reversing lever M through the rod L. An arm A<1> and plunger D<1> are arranged on the other side of the locomotive for use when the engine is running tender first and the two sets are connected together by bell-crank levers and the link O. A bell-crank lever U is connected between the link O and the rod V, which passes into a bracket W and enters a groove c in a rod Z, Fig. 6, thereby holding the rod in place and holding open the valve x in the main steam supply. A rod j is attached to the bell-crank lever E and to the lever n for operating the brake-regulator s through an adjustable rod t. Wedge-shaped pieces AA are pivoted along the track and are operated from the signals. When the line is clear the pieces AA occupy the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, but when the signal is in the danger position the pieces are raised to form inclined planes engaged by the end of the plunger D on the. engine. The arm A is tilted about its pivot, and operates the bell-crank levers E, U, the latter of which pulls the rod V away from the rod Z, thereby allowing the spring v to close the steam valve x, while the former, E, operates the brake valve. The plunger D is raised by the reversing gear when in the reverse position, to clear the wedge pieces on that side of the track. The Provisional Specification states that the closing of the throttle valve causes a lever to engage a rack so that the driver must descend to disengage the lever before he can operate the throttle.
