Abstract

181,129. Vickers, Ltd., McKechnie, Sir J., and Rabbidge, W. F. March 10, 1921. Bell signals; signalling disagreement of controlling gear and the like with order telegraphs.-In signalling apparatus for giving warning when a rotary shaft, for example, a ship's engine-shaft, is running in a direction contrary to that signalled by the telegraphic or like control apparatus, the rotary member carries a pair of oppositely-acting one-way clutch members controlling alternatively a pair of warning devices which are alternatively moved into and out of operating position alternatively by the telegraphic apparatus in such a way that if the directions of rotation are not in agreement one of the warning devices is operated. The apparatus may also give warning if rotation continues after the ' stop ' signal has been given. In an example, Fig. 1, two toothed wheels B, mounted by oppositely-directed free-wheel clutches on the rotating member A, engage with studs d' on spring clappers D, D<1> of a bell C. The clappers also carry cam members d' which are engaged alternately by studs f<1> on a two-armed lever f mounted on a shaft F of the telegraphic apparatus. When the direction of rotation of the member A agrees with that signalled by the shaft F, the clapper D is held out of the path of the toothed-wheel B which would have operated it; but when the directions of rotating do not correspond, the other clapper D<1>, which is not held up, is operated by the other toothed-wheel B to give a warning stroke to the bell C. The lever f may be so constructed that in its neutral position, corresponding to the stop signal, neither of the cams d<2> is engaged, and if the shaft A is turning in either direction, one or other of the toothed-wheels B will operate its appropriate clapper to sound the bell.
