Furnace details, - In an electric furnace in which the firebars of the grate move or rotate to discharge the heated material, these bars are so arranged in relation to the electrodes, or the grate is so constructed that the electric conductivity between the ends of the grate nearest the electrodes is substantially eliminated in order to prevent the current from passing through the grate instead of through the material to be heated. In cne arrangement the fire-bars are arranged parallel to one another and perpendicular to a vertical plane through the electrodes. Rotary grate bars 1 mounted in bearings carried by a metal or non-conducting frame 2 are insulated from the frame, which may be of stone or cement, by insulating washers 3, 6.
