Abstract

180,079. Justice, J. F. Feb. 24, 1921. Roundabouts.-Relates to an amusement apparatus adapted to give passengers the sensations of a submarine voyage when in fact they do not leave the surface. A serpentine watercourse is partially formed as one or more tunnels, the remainder having double glass water tank sides in which are fish, seaweed, and other marine objects. Water is made to flow round the course by centrifugal or other pumps, the current being used to propel imitation submarines, Fig. 5. These submarines consist of a pontoon I3 carrying a superstructure I4, pivoted at I6 and adapted to be longtiudinally inclined by a lever J2 operated by the pilot. Double glass windows I2 are adapted to be filled with water from a tank carried on the submarine and kept full by a pump actuated by a small petrol or other motor J, which may also be adapted to make the superstructure oscillate through cams I,. Water-jets are provided in the tunnels to wet the exterior of the submarine. In cases where ground space is limited, the submarines are attached to radius-rods pivoted to a standard and adapted to be rotated by hand. Scenic effects are provided by projecting cinematograph pictures of the sea-bed on to a concave screen viewed through a double window in the front of the boat. A glass tank containing water, live fish, &c. may be, interposed between the submarine and the screen.
