Tunnel kilns; expansion joints.-In a kiln having a heating-chamber 2 and one or more cooling-chambers 4, the cooling-chamber is protected from the expansion of the heating-chamber by a yielding device 5 which is interposed. The yielding device comprises thin dished plates 6, 6 which are riveted or otherwise secured together at 7 and are secured respectively by bolts 9 to the cooling-chamber 4 and the casing 3 of a sliding valve, which casing is secured to the heating- chamber 2. The plates 6, 6 have central openings of the same shape as the kiln section. The amount of expansion allowed by the plates 6 is restricted by a plate 16 which is secured on one end to the casing 3 and is provided at the other end with holes into which project pins 19 secured to the chamber 4, the play between the pins 19 and the holes allowing longitudinal movement of the plate 16. Further longitudinal expansion of the heating-chamber moves the chamber 4 on its supporting-rollers 13. The device 5 may be placed between the valve and the heating-chamber, at the rear end of the cooling-chamber, or, when more than one cooling-chamber is employed more than one device 5 may be used. In a modification, the plates 6 are flat and a peripherally-arranged distance piece is provided. Transverse and unequal expansion movements are permitted by the plates 6.
