Abstract

178,971. Mitchell's Electrical & Wireless, Ltd., and Heather, R. Feb. 4, 1921. Thermionic modulating systems. - Wireless transmitting apparatus, of the kind in which the modulating valve constitutes a variable grid leak for the oscillating valve generator, has the grid of the modulating-valve normally maintained at such negative potential that the main valve is unable to oscillate, the action of the key or microphone being to vary the potential of the modulator grid and so permit the main valve to oscillate at a greater or less amplitude. The main valve has its plate circuit supplied !by a source Band coupled to the grid oscillatory circuit C in the usual manner. The modulating valve D has its filament d connected to the grid oscillatory circuit C and its plate d<2> connected to a positive point b<1> on the battery B, or on a separate battery, the filament-plate path d, d<2> thus forming a grid leak for the main valve A. The grid circuit of the modulating-valve includes a potentiometer j and is coupled inductively to a microphone circuit E. For telegraphy, a key j<1> may be inserted in the potentiometer circuit. The modulatiug-valve is shunted by a condenser d<1> for the passage of highfrequency current in the main grid circuit.
