Abstract

178,906. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 19, 1921. Thermionic amplifiers. -In a thermionic or like valve of the type described in Specification 167,561, in which the discharge between an electron-emitting cathode and an anode is controlled by a magnetic field of a magnitude near the critical value at which a small increase in the field produces a substantial reduction in the current passing through the valve, the cathode is now arranged around the anode. As shown, the anode 17 is mounted in the axis of a helical cathode 2 heated by a battery 5. The magnetic field may be produced by polarizing windings 10, 11 in series with a battery 12, and a variable resistance 13, and by a winding 7 carrying current to be amplified, for instance, wireless-signalling currents. The anode is connected with the cathode through a battery 14 and an indicating device such as a telephone receiver 15. The bulb is preferably highly exhausted, so that a pure electron discharge is obtained, but a small amount of gas ionization is permissible.
