Abstract

178,556. Jensen, C. A., (Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.). Jan. 18, 1921. Directing and adjustably supporting endless-chain conveyers and elevators; driving-gear.-The conveyer framework of a portable machine for piling bags, packages, &c. is in two parts independently adjustable in vertical planes, one of the parts being adjustable so that bags &c. may be received and discharged conveniently at points near the ground, and the other part being movable through a wider range to discharge to or receive from piles of various heights. The parts 4, 5 of the framework are connected to the body of the machine by pivots 8, 7 near to which are disposed idler and driving sprockets 83, 84, 86 for the conveyer chain 1 in order that no appreciable alteration of the tension of the chain shall be produced by the pivotal adjustment of the framework. The framework 4 is adjusted by a screw 11, and the framework 5 bv screw- and-nut mechanism 104, 108 actuated by the motor 37. A strut 12 pivoted to the framework 5 is attached to a cross-head 101 having rollers 102 travelling on a guide rail 103 and having the nut 108 non-rotatably mounted within it. A bevelgear 109 fixed on the shaft 104 simultaneously engages bevel-pinions 110, 111, Fig. 11, mounted on a shaft 112, one end of which is journaled in a sleeve 114 screw-threaded in a bearing 115. If the sleeve is rotated by the arm 116 in either direction, longitudinal movement of the shaft occurs and one of the clutches 118, 119 associated. with the gears 110, 111 is engaged, thereby causing the rotation of the gear 109 in one direction or the other. The shaft 112 is connected by chain- and-sprocket gearing to a gear 122 freely mounted on a tie-rod 35, Fig. 5, connecting the sides of the framework. The gear 122 is integral with a gear 51, which constantly meshes with a gear 50 on a jack shaft 40 driven by the shaft of the motor 37. A sprocket 97 can be connected to the shaft 40 by actuating the clutch 98 through the lever mechanism shown. A chain 96 connects the sprocket 97 with a sprocket 95 on a shaft 90 which drives the shaft 87 carrying the driving sprocket 86 of the conveyer through reversing gear, Fig. 10. Each end of the conveyer framework has means for engaging and driving the sectional conveyer units described in Specification 177,634.
