My invention relates to certain improvements in signature delivery mechanism for printing presses and particularly to packer deliveries Where signatures of onethickness are delivered during one run of the press and signatures of another thickness are delivered during another runof the press, such signatures being delivered vertically into the packer and moved along the same in their vertical position by an intermittently moving endless carrier.
rlhe object of my invention is to provide novel means including an epicyclic gear train for imparting an intermittent movement to the endless carrier7 of a predetermined distance and at the desired speed to prevent the smutting or smearing of the signatures as they are moved along the packer.
A practical embodiment of my invention is in which Fig. 1 represents a detail side elevation of my improved packer delivery.

The packer delivery table is denoted by 1 on which is slidably mounted the packer block 2, as usual. The reciprocating carriage 3 for the packer lingers l is provided with the usual rack 5 and pinion G by means of which the packer lingers are reciprocated from the cam '7 on the shaft 8 through the rack and pinion 9 and 10. 111. 11 designate the usual side guides for receiving the signatures vertically.
The intermittently moving endless carrier which acts as a traveling support for the signatures is shown as comprising a plurality of endless chains 12 which extend around the curved guides 13 at the inner end of the table 1, idler pulleys 14 at the outer end of the 5:; table and sprocket Wheels 15 fast on a cross represented in the accompanying drawings,`

shaft 16, mounted in suitable brackets 17 progecting from the packer delivery frame 1S. The endless chains 12 are kept taut by the belt tightener pulleys 19 carried by the upper ends of the rock arms 20. v Y
The cross shaft 16 is driven from the endless carrier drive shaft 21 through a chain 22 which passes around a sprocket 23 fast on the cross shaft 16 and a sprocket 24.- fast on the drive shaft 21.
rllhe epicyclic geartrain which is operated to move the endless carrier chains 12 intermittently in one direction a predetermined distance and at the desired speed, is constructed, arranged and operated as follows.
A gear 25 concentric With the axis of the drive shaft 21 is made fast to the delivery frame as, for instance, by the screw bolts 26. A corresponding gear 27 concentric with the gear 25 is made fast to the drive shaft 21 as, for instance, by the key 28. This gear 27 has a different number ofrteeth than the gear 2 5. ln the present instance it has a lesser number of teeth. A tivo armed lever has its hub 29 rotatably mounted on the drive shaft 21., the arm 30 of which lever is pro vided with a stud 31 on which is rotatably mounted a Wide faced pinion 32 which meshes with both of the gears 25 and 27. rllhe arm 33 of this lever is provided with a stud 34 on which are rotatably mounted the pinions 35 and 86, the pinion 35 meshing with the stationary gear 25 and the pinion 36 meshing With the,v gear 27 fast on the drive shaft 21.
An intermittent rotary movement in one direction is imparted to the tvvo armed lever Vfor imparting an intermittent rotary movement in the opposite direction to the drive shaft 21, as follows:
` A. ratchet 37 is secured to the hub 29 of the two armed lever as, for instance, by the screw bolts 38. A. bolt 39 is mounted on a rock arm 10 pivoted to swing on the drive shaft 21. which arm 10 is oscillated from the continuously rotating crank shaft 41 through a pitman 42 connected at its lower end to the pavvl arm and adjustably connected at its upper end at 413 to the crank shaft 41.
By the use of the epicyclic gear train in the mechanism for driving the endless carrier of the packer delivery Iam enabled to adjust the movement of the endless carrier to a much more accurate extent to the thickness of the signature being'delivered than has heretofore been possible with merely a pavvl and noA ratchet connection Vfor lthis purpose. vrliis minute adgustnient 1s very important in certain classes of products Where the thickness of the signatures vary quitematerially in` one product'being delivered during'one run ot the press ovei another product being delivered during another run of the' press, some of which signatures being so thin that the movement ot the carrier could` not be ad- Ajusted to, suit the said signatures. t
