Abstract

178,553. Maclean, J. M. Jan. 18, 1921. Vaporizers, external. - Liquid fuel is continuously heated under a pressure sufficient to prevent vaporization at the temperature attained and is allowed to flow into a mixing chamber at approximately atmospheric pressure where the f u e 1 is immediately vaporized by its contained heat before delivery to the engine intake. The pressure is maintained by impregnating the fuel in a tank with compressed air or an inflammable gas such as hydrogen. Fig. 1 shows a closed fuel-tank 4 maintained under a constant pressure by compressed air or hydrogen fed through a reducing valve 6 from a chamber 5, which is at a considerably higher pressure. The pipe supplying the gas may dip below the surface of the liquid to facilitate solution. The fuel passes up a pipe 7 to a coil 8 heated by the exhaust, and enters the mixing chamber 9 under control of a needle valve 10, Fig. 3. The chamber 9 has a constriction 13, and in the upper part is an air valve 16 controlled by the driver. The resulting mixture passes through a pipe 14 to the intake manifold near the air-inlet 15. A stop valve 11 and pressure-gauge 12 are provided on the pipe 7.
